LASIK Downers Grove

If you are thinking about having LASIK eye surgery, you first must find a good surgeon who is experienced and approved by organizations such as The American Board of Eye Surgeons or The Council for Refractive Surgery Quality Assurance.   In addition to the surgical procedure, there are a few things that some people will need to do to prepare for the surgery and  also after the surgery.

Before your surgery

If you wear contact lenses, your surgeon will likely advise you to stop wearing them several weeks prior to your surgery.  The reason for this is that contact lenses could change the shape of your cornea.  This means that the measurements that the doctor takes before surgery will be inaccurate and will result in inadequate outcome.  How long you will stop wearing the lenses before surgery will depend on how long you have been wearing them and the type of contact lens.

It is also advised that if you wear make-up around your eye to skip wearing it the day before and the day of surgery.  You may be asked to clean your eye lashes for several days before surgery to minimize any risk of infection.  During a pre-surgical visit, your doctor will talk to you about your medical history and take measurements of your cornea with specialized instruments.  These measurements are important for the surgeon to know what portion and how much of the cornea to apply the laser during surgery so that the optimal effect is achieved. The laser will correct abnormalities and re-shape the cornea.

After Surgery

The surgery itself takes 15 to 30 minutes and you can go home soon afterward.  You will need to have someone drive you home because your vision will not be clear right away.  Right after your LASIK surgery you may experience itching or a burning sensation, and your eye may water.  The doctor will give you pain medication to help keep you more comfortable.   He/she may also recommend wearing a shield on your eye at night to keep from rubbing it until it is healed.

In the days after surgery your vision will be improved but not completely clear.  It usually takes two or three months for your eye to heal completely and for your vision to stabilize.  You may also have to wait a few weeks before wearing make-up around your eye, undergoing sports such as swimming, as well as strenuous sports or using a hot tub. You will return for a follow-up visit 1 or 2 days after your surgery, and additional follow-up appointments for 6 to 12 months as your doctor recommends.
