LASIK Oak Lawn
The LASIK Examination
LASIK surgery is usually used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism and is voluntary. People who have it no longer need to wear their contact lenses or glasses. The first step for you and your doctor is the exam. You will have a thorough examination with a surgeon and a technician to take accurate measurements of the shape of your cornea. This is necessary because the surgeon will be etching small areas of your cornea in order to correct the shape and produce corrected vision.
Diagnostic Equipment
The doctor will take your complete medical history to make sure that the treatments will not harm you and the results will be optimized.
Your surgeon and the technician will utilize a machine that measures the parameters of your eyes. The machine will be either an auto Refractometer or an Abberometer. The auto refectormeter is able to measure certain parameters of your eye, such as the average optical quality. An abberometer, on the other hand, is also able to measure other small details in localized optical quality. In reality, eyes are not homogeneous in shape, so the Aberometer technology produces a more accurate picture of your eye.
The abberometer scans the eye using a technology called called Wavefront-guided technology. This diagnostic tool is able to find and map small abberations that an auto refractometer is not able to. An abberation is an optical defect that occurs when rays from a point object transmitting to the eye fail to form a perfect point after passing through the optical system. This is usually caused by an irregular shape in the cornea or lens.
Abberations are classified into higher and lower orders. About 90% of people with vision errors have lower order abberations, and 10% have higher-order. Lower order abberations can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. The Wavefront Technology system is able to detect both lower and higher order abberations, while the auto refractometer can only detect lower order abberations. In essence, the abberometer system can produce a topographical map of your eye.
